"Luck, my friend, comes only to the one who doesn't expect it. If you boast about winning, it will flee. If you concentrate on the process, it will come to your aid like a bird."
(p. 286) Arash says this when the sandstorm is swirling around him and Ismail when they are heading to the riddle contest. They were talking about how Ismail thinks Arash is going to win and Arash is warning him not to get his hopes up.

I think that this quote shows importance in the book because Arash is trying to say that even though he hopes he will win, he may not. Arash is trying to be sensible and does not want to convince himself that he will win and then not win. In the end Arash did win and maybe because he was not over confident, he won.
Is this a lesson only for Arash? Does this lesson apply to Anahita too?
Yes, this also applies to Anahita because she sometimes takes her good luck for granted. When she found out that her father was posting the posters for the riddle contest, the first things out of her mouth were complaints. She didn't even stop to think about the risk her father was taking for her. She didn't take into account that the tribe would eventually pay for what her father did for her. She finally realizes that luck only comes to you if your good enough to recieve it. When she realizes this luck DOES come to her aid and Arash shows up at the contest.
